Roof Underlayment Materials & Considerations

By: Victors Home Solutions

The roof on top of our homes and offices are more complex than many of us realize. One of the components that make a complete roof is referred to as the roof underlayment. The purpose of this layer is to provide a barrier between the upper canopy and the decking of your home so that even if a shingle comes loose, your decking & attic insulation will remain dry.

There are different types of roof underlayment, each with its own characteristics and advantages. To make the best choice, you need to understand what roof underlayment is made of and how their different qualities will affect the effectiveness of your roof.

Here’s a quick rundown…

Underlayment Types

Asphalt-Saturated Felt Roof Underlayment

The most well-known type of roof underlayment is asphalt-saturated felt, which is very similar to tar paper, the only difference being that it uses asphalt instead of tar. It is the most affordable type on the market today, which is why it remains popular. Still, it does not measure up to synthetic roof underlayment or rubberized asphalt in terms of durability and flexibility.

You can find this type of underlayment in two standard weights, the No. 30 (30 pounds per hundred square feet) and the No. 15 (15 pounds per hundred square feet). No. 15 is recommended for lighter projects such as garages or sheds, while No. 30 is suitable for residential properties.

Rubberized Asphalt Roof Underlayment

If your top priority is to make your roof waterproof, rubberized asphalt should be your first choice. Because of its water-resistant qualities, it is often used to reinforce leak-prone areas such as vents, chimneys, eaves, skylights, valleys, and so on. Also known as self-adhering underlayment, it’s particularly effective because it forms an airtight seal with the deck it’s attached to.

While it is relatively expensive compared to the other options on this list, it is the best option for commercial or residential properties in regions that experience extreme temperature fluctuations throughout the year.

Synthetic Underlayment

Synthetic underlayment is the most recent type of roof underlayment developed for residential use and is made out of spun or woven polypropylene/polyethylene. Synthetic underlayment is specifically designed to be highly durable and tear-resistant.

In terms of cost, it lies between rubberized asphalt and asphalt-saturated felt, making it an excellent option for those looking for a cost-effective solution without sacrificing their durability. Synthetic underlayment is also a popular waterproofing option because of its anti-slip properties and the fact that it is inert to mold.

Final Thoughts on Roof Underlayment Options

When picking out the type of underlayment for your property, remember that asphalt-saturated felt is best for slate shingles, tile shingles, and inexpensive roof repairs. Rubberized asphalt is most suited for extreme temperatures, leak prevention, and premium roofing projects. Synthetic underlayment is excellent for projects where mold resistance, tear resistance, and overall durability are a priority.
