Before the Snow Falls: How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

By: Victors Home Solutions

Home and roof during winter

It’s that time of year..

When the first snow hits, your roof becomes the unsung hero protecting your home from cold, wind, and ice. But winter weather can quickly expose small issues you didn’t even know were there and by then, it’s often too late (or too cold) for easy fixes. At Victors Home Solutions, we’ve seen it all – from ice dams that lead to ceiling leaks to gutters so packed with leaves they turn into mini ice rinks. The good news? A little preparation before temperatures drop can save you major stress (and repair costs) later.

Inspect Shingles, Flashing, and Gutters Before the First Freeze

Start your winter prep with a simple visual check from the ground. Look for shingles that appear cracked, curled, or missing because they’re your roof’s first line of defense against moisture.

Next, inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights. Flashing seals out water where materials meet, and even a small gap can let melted snow sneak in.

Don’t forget your gutters: if they’re clogged with leaves and debris, melting snow won’t have anywhere to go. That trapped water refreezes, adds weight, and can cause your gutters to pull away from the roofline.

2. Check Attic Insulation and Ventilation to Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams form when warm air from your home escapes into the attic, melting snow on your roof. One of the most common causes of roof leaks we see is when that meltwater refreezes at the eaves, creating a dam that traps water and forces it under shingles.

To prevent this:

  • Inspect your attic insulation: You should have a consistent, thick layer (typically R-38 or higher in northern climates). If you can see the tops of your ceiling joists, you likely need more.
  • Look for proper ventilation: Your attic should stay cold in winter. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and gable vents help air circulate so heat doesn’t build up.
  • Seal air leaks: Check for gaps around pipes, light fixtures, and chimneys where warm indoor air could escape.

A balanced attic system keeps both your roof and your heating bills in good shape.

3. Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection Before The First Snow

Even if your roof looks fine from the ground, a professional inspection can catch issues that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. Victors team members check the full roofing system, from shingle condition to underlayment, flashing, gutters, attic airflow, and more.

Why schedule early? Once snow and ice accumulate, inspections and repairs become trickier (and sometimes unsafe). Fall is the perfect window to address small repairs, replace worn sealant, and ensure your roof is ready for the season ahead.
